Fun Facts . . .
1. It is believed that scissors were invented in Egypt around 1500 BC. They were a basic
shear like form made from one piece of metal.
2. The more current design, with a criss-cross action, were believed to have been created
by the Romans around 100 AD.
3. The term scissors comes from the Latin word,"cisoria," meaning "cutting instrument."
4. In 1761, Robert Hinchliffe, of Sheffield, England, was the first to use cast steel
in making scissors. He is known as the "father of modern scissors."
5. Even though it is just 1 scissors, it is called a "pair" of scissors. This is believed to have
been due to the scissors having 2 blades.
6. In 2023, a Guinness World Record was set for the world's longest scissors
by the Arizona Science Center. The pair of scissors measured in at
10 feet long and weighed 93 pounds!!
7. These days, there are MANY different types of scissors. Here are just a few:
pinking shears, embroidery snips, craft scissors,
safety scissors, grooming scissors, rotary cutters
upholstery scissors, and buttonhole scissors.
