A Rainbow of Their Own

When I was a child, one of my very favorite picture books was, A Rainbow of My Own, by Don Freeman. Perhaps you might remember it, or maybe you have even read it yourself a time or two. I always loved how the book allowed the young reader to creatively think and believe that a rainbow could perhaps be different shapes, bend and move, or even be a playmate and friend to someone. Well, the artists that you will see here, have certainly proven that with art, you can most definitely make a rainbow of your very own, and make them just about anywhere! The artist featured above, Gabriel Dawe, creates unique, large scale installations in various buildings and interesting places all throughout the world. The installation shown, Plexus A1, used LOTS of colorful sewing thread, and was created in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. You can watch a video of him talking about this particular installation art piece here. He has also created his unique form of rainbows in places such as, The Denver Art Museum, The Toledo Museum of Art, Villa Olmo in Como, Italy, and even in the San Antonio International Airport. Below are a few more artists who are going "beyond the rainbow" with their artwork. You can learn more about them by clicking their name underneath each image. Check them out!

You can learn about even more artists and the rainbows that they make, by clicking on this article, 10 Avant-Garde Artists Whose Rainbow Art Installations Will Mesmerize You, from the My Modern Met website.

And, if you are in the mood for some wonderful, childhood nostalgia, you can watch this read-a-loud, online version of Don Freeman's classic book, A Rainbow of My Own.
