When you first look at this image, what would you guess it is created from? You can probably tell that it is something from outside in nature--like grass perhaps, as you might have noticed buildings in the background, or the road on the right side of the photograph. Would you be surprise to find out that this image of Leonardo DaVinci's famous Mona Lisa, is actually created in a rice paddy? Rice paddy art, known as tanbo art(tanbo means paddy or rice field), has been drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each growing season. The tiny village of Inakadate, located in Japan's Aomori Prefecture(about 370 miles north of Tokyo), has been creating unique and various images since 1993. By carefully designing and planting different types of rice plants in various hues, like green, yellow, white, ochre, and purple stalks, the art then grows into reality! Visitors view the work from an elevated platform on a nearby observation tower. This allows them to have a "bird's eye view" of the fields of rice below, thus revealing the carefully planned out image. This concept of tanbo art has now spread to other villages in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Check out some more rice paddy art creations below.
