The Stillness of the Season

The winter season in some parts of the world could be described as one that is filled with a kind of monochromatic stillness. Of things being either black or white, light or dark. White, like fluffy snowflakes that blanket the earth, or black like the night sky above us, frigid with cold. Light, like the bright sun glinting off a snow-covered landscape, or dark, like the early evening sunset of the winter solstice. For some, this season can be a restless time. Perhaps it's too cold, or the sun sets too early. The want to get out more; a bit of struggling from within ourselves. But there is beauty in the stillness of this season, the simplicity of it-- the "it either is, or isn't." In these months of hunkering down, cozying up, and settling in, we can also find peace and rest within ourselves. It can be a time to be okay with relaxing more, and focusing on the simple things around us. A warm cup of tea or coffee, a really good book to read, cuddling up with a thick blanket--all such simple things, but also all things that can bring us a sense of warmth and comfort. In celebrating the stillness of this season, this post shows several different art mediums, created by various artists, all done in some kind of monochromatic format--either light or dark, or black and white. You can find out more about each individual artist by clicking on their name below their artwork. While looking at these artworks, notice the starkness of light and dark, black and white. What does it make you think about? How does it make you feel? Perhaps these images can show how a sense of stillness and simplicity can be held not only in an art form, but also in something on a much bigger scale--one that we can take from and learn to live in our own lives.
