For most of us, we hit the beach in the warmer months to enjoy the sand, sun, and fun in the water. But for the two artists in this month's blog post, they hit the beach to use the sand to create their own very unique form of art! The first artist, Janel Hawkins, created the dragon above, as well as the first 2 images below. You can often find her working for up to 6-8 hours a day on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama, creating everything from intricate architectural buildings, to fantastical creatures like mermaids. She has become what is referred to as a professional sand castle builder, and is the creator and owner of Sand Castle University. She and her team can even be hired to create custom sculptures for weddings, business events, and other venues. However, by the next day, her creations are gone--washed away by the tide. But even if they don't last forever, they are preserved in her social media accounts, where she documents all her artistic endeavors. You can view more of her amazing sand art by clicking on Sand Castle University, or on her Instagram. If you want to see her making her art in action, you can watch the videos in this link from the Today Show.

The next sand artist featured in this blog, Nikola Faller, created the following two pieces of sand art. This Croatian artist has been making these large, geographical patterns in the sand for about the last seven years. Using ropes, sticks, and rakes, he creates the images, sometime up to 130-190 feet wide. His largest to date has measured at 295 feet! It takes him about 3 to 4 hours to create his art. But other than a photograph to capture the final artwork, they are just temporary. His pieces only last until the tide comes in, and then the sea water erases it. You can see more of his work on his Instagram.

So the next time you go hit the beach, maybe try to think outside of the box--or shall we say, "outside of the sand castle," and create your most amazing, awesome sand WHATEVER!
