Did you know that finger painting is not just for kids anymore? In fact, the artwork above, Deer Demure, was painted by Iris Scott, a famous artist who creates her paintings using her hands and fingers instead of a traditional paintbrush. Hard to believe when looking at her artwork, but yes, it’s true! The Fun Art Facts page of my website is actually about finger painting for the fall “edition,” so you can learn more by checking it out if you’d like. Finger painting was originally invented by Ruth Faison Shaw, and was seen as a valuable form of physical and emotional therapy, mostly used with young children. But many artists these days have taken the art of finger painting to the next level, as in the case of Iris Scott. You can enjoy looking at several of her artworks below. Even better, you can watch some videos of her in action by clicking here— it’s pretty fascinating to watch her at work! You can also learn about more artists that use creative methods of painting on my Fun Art Facts website page. Just scroll down to Fun Fact #5 and click on the individual artists links. Then, maybe find some paint and paper, and give it a try for yourself--no need for paintbrushes either! Or, you can simply enjoy looking at some beautiful artwork and learning about a unique way of painting. Either way, you can enjoy the arts, whether you get your hands messy or not.
